Reducing the size of fire in fireplace

Hi guys, I am wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to reduce the size of the fire for a fireplace. I made this fireplace from scratch but the fire appears to be too big for it, and it comes out the sides and top. I was wondering if there is a way to make the fire smaller?
