Baking in Cycles differs from Blender render. - in Object mode create a plane with Add - Mesh - Plane, make it big. Creating the floor leads to more shadows and to a better looking bake result; - in the UV editor click on New, change Height, click on Color, change Alpha to 0; - switch the rendering engine to Cycles. You do this before creating a material; - expand the timeline at the bottom and change it to the Node editor; - click on New ( this is where you see Material ); - if nodes wont appear, enable Use nodes; - Add - Texture - Image texture, do not plug this node anywhere. Click on Browse button and choose the texture you created in the uv editor. Make sure this node, as well as your object ( not the floor )are selected; - in the Render tab expand Samples and change Render to at least 500 ( you can test with 50, but the final image should be baked with more ); - if you'll find that the baking time takes too long, you can reduce Bounces to 1 in Light paths; - Expand Bake. Change Bake type to Ambient occlusion; - change Margins to 6; - hit Bake

mauvemorn , I have these black spots which I'm assuming are doubles, but I removed doubles at the start of the mesh and again just now before the bake and this is happening. Here's the Blend before I removed doubles for the second time but before I hit bake.

See dark shadows along sharp edges? this is why we split edges and this will be baked to texture. Undo removing doubles
These are body parts clipping into the garment. Expand the rig and disable rendering (camera icon) for top and bottom

mauvemorn I've reloaded my save before I removed doubles. Is this the time I would add split modifier or select the dress and mesh - edges - edge split? Because I thought I had done the modifier already.

Edge split modifier split the mesh while Remove doubles merges it. If you undone removing doubles and there are no dark shadows, you do not need to split it.

There is a shadow along the bottom edge. You are meant to always split it, not just for baking but before importing in s4s Also, the bottom of the dress is not split. Alt-click on it and Mesh - Edges - Edge split Also, the floor is meant to be under feet.
