Sometimes the autonomy will override the reading of a book, if they're in need of something else (food, bath, sleep, fun etc) they will stop reading and go do other things. You have to have them keep reading the book until the aspiration is completed or the book no longer gives skillups. I believe they will continue where they left off on the book too. There are books that are too advanced for initial reading and you have to read the earlier books before reading the latter. Like vampire lore and skill books. You can't start at book 3-4 without reading 1 or 2.
Example for kids, if a kid has a low fun need they will want to play instead of reading the book or do homework until they've filled the fun need bar. Also traits can play a part in that too... I think a bookworm will read more books while a child who is active will want to be outside or playing with toys more often.
Toddlers just get bored easily so they will not always sit down to read an entire book even if it is a baby book but they can get an adult to read to them and be interested in the book.
