I'd suggest you checking the step-by-step tutorials that Orangemittens has written in this forum. You can take a look at the "Start to finish object tutorial for absolute beginners" and the "Start to finish new mesh accessory for absolute beginners", It doesn't matter if you don't want to make an accessory, check the first part when she makes the mesh, it may help you understand better the low poly style.
