I haven't played Sims that long and I can't seem to get the answer off of Google. So here I go, if I buy a Sims pack do I get all of the new building stuff from it right away or do I have to play the career associated with the pack to get the stuff? Thanks in advance for helping out this noob. Not sure if I understand your question correctly, but if your game is up-to-date you should get everything that the new pack has to offer. The only thing you are probably not getting is If you not buying a pack like “cottage living” on time of release which had 3 extra objects.

I don't think any of the build items (wallpapers, doors, etc.) have restrictions on them. So as soon as you install the pack you can build with them. But for buy items (shelves, chairs, decorations, etc.), some of them have restrictions, so that you can only buy them once your sim has achieved a specific milestone, like reaching a certain level in a career. If you want, you can make versions of those items in S4S that don't have restrictions attached, so that any sim can buy them. (It's a pretty quick fix and doesn't require messing with Blender or xml.) The tutorial for that is here: sims4studio.com/thread/354/make-locked-objects-buyable-achievement?page=1
