So there is loads of Expansion Packs out there and I was wondering which one to buy? I seen on YT a trailer for ECO LIVING and it looks poo. I might go buy myself Cats & Dogs instead

Unless you reeeeeally want cats and dogs in your game (as this is pretty much the entire gimmic of the pack, plus vets, which were a bit fun to play once or twice in a similar wasy as the doctor in Get to Work), the EP has little else to offer, although I do like the neighborhood area it comes with. The pets get boring pretty fast, and soon enough that nice neighborhood is filled to the brim with rainbow poop and trash plants, blue-tinged and sick animals all over the place, and various other annoying things. I do occasionally add pets to families, but they are quite buggy and there's little playability to them, especially the toys they have (I prefer pets in TS2 and TS3, honestly - they were much better made and you didn't have to buy an additional pack to get small pets... which I haven't bothered to do, because again, the small pets were better in TS2 and TS3, and there were more of them). The pets are cute and within CAS I kinda like them - but out of CAS they fall rather flat compared to their predecessors (they're whiny and neurotic for no reason, their needs go from fine to red in no time, the toy and play animations are boring, etc.). I can't quite remember why I decided to buy this pack (possibly to have a full set of rigs? I don't know - I do remember wanting to do some pet-related CC conversions) but I did get it at half price or some such...
I gave Get to Work as well. It's not too bad. I got it for a slightly different purpose than playing it (conversion to TS2, mostly - it's a while ago now), but it does have some playability until you've exhausted the "DungeonMaster" jobs. Detective is the least fun (it's the same over and over again once you're over the first 3-4 levels), doctor is okay (you get some additional playability with leveling up), scientist is the one I've had the most fun with (extra things to play with for leveling up). Aliens are a bit fun at first, there's retail (haven't played much with it, but I think you can do "rags to riches" challenges and other fun things with it), so it does have some additional gameplay and may not be completely exhausted the first few times you play it.
As for the others I can't give much of an opinion as I don't have them...

I wish I hadn't brought Cats & Dogs, the neighbourhood is lovely but the place was full of dirty, diseased, neurotic strays and creepy pet owners 'shudders'. Coolspears Empty Streets mod took care of the disgusting animals, but if you have a pet they all have some neurotic fear. It drove me mad. There isn't a dog or cat on Earth that was born before the invention of electrical items yet this pack makes them scared of practically all of them. My friends cats sleep on the keyboards, the ledge under the massive tv screens, their dogs play with their phones, which is bad thing, None of them are scared of anything. So the pack sucks. Sorry... Island Living is wonderful (better with empty streets, but that's just me) Why? because I would love to live here it's not only beautiful during the day, it has an endless sky full of stars and a huge honey coloured moon at night, it also has these amazing sunsets that turn the sky orange, pink and purple. And they can swim in the ocean. My sims camp on the little islands for a few days occasionally, living off bbq fish and pineapples; swimming and painting and even a little yoga. It's the only way to live
