parts of frankenmesh are darker?

So, I did a recolor of this hair, and all went smoothly:

Then I wanted to make a braided version, so I frankenmeshed the bangs onto another hair.  And for some reason the bangs are now darker and duller then the rest of the hair:

It looks normal in s4s but has this problem in-game.  The texture is exactly the same, and it happens even if I change the normal/shadow/specular etc to blank so I don't think it's a problem with those. It's driving me nuts, does anyone know what might be wrong?  Thank you for your time
