Introduction:
If you have been directed here looking for how to make an object recolor that requires the original item in order to function in the game please go to this TUTORIAL
This tutorial will go over the selective clone feature added in the Love series of Sims 4 Studio. This feature can be used for a variety of purposes. The example in this tutorial is a painting that is a selective clone of a painting that I made using the Studio Recolorables feature. Making a selective clone of the painting allowed me to have it reference all its resources from the first painting except for the model and the footprint. In this way I can make a second version of the first and change only its size. It will have all the same textures as the first while including none of those images in the .package. In order to work correctly it will need the first painting to be in the Mods folder too.
Note: you cannot make a selective clone recolor without including both the textures and the models. EA constructed object .packages so that the textures are included in the model resources. If you don't include the model in a recolor selective clone the recolor will not work in the game whether the original item is also in the game or not.
What you will need:
Sims 4 Studio - Love series or above
Instructions:
1. Put a dot in the radio button next to Selective Clone beneath the Object button.
2. Click the Object button.
3. Select the item you want to clone from the thumbnail list. The item can be an EA item or a custom content item. In this case I'm selecting a painting I made and placed into my Sims 4 Studio mods folder. The Customize Object Clone box will come up. This is where you select which resources you want. Anything with a check in the box adjacent to the resource name will be pulled into the .package and will be editable. Any resource that does not have a check in the box for it will not be pulled into the .package and it will not be editable.
4. Export the mesh and make the edits you want. Note: if you don't include the textures in the .package you will not be able to edit them now. The item will use the exact same textures that whatever you cloned it has.
5. Import your edited mesh back to the .package. In this case I just scaled the painting so it is much smaller. Following that I edited the Footprint to match.
Check the edited item in the game.
The selective clone feature can be used for a variety of purposes. If it is used on an EA item the player will need to own whatever game that item comes with in order to use the new one you've made. If it is used on a custom content item the player will need the first item in order for the new selective clone to work properly.

- For this .package I wanted the model so I could edit the mesh, the footprint so I could edit it to match the new size of the painting, the model thumbnail resource, and strings, definitions, and catalog so I could edit the item's name, price, and description.
- I kept all the numbering options as they are set by default. The Renumber option, if selected, will make the new item a unique standalone item. If it is not selected it will overwrite the original item in the game. The Use 32bit Instance Numbers option, if checked, will make the item work with the Design Tool. Until EA fixes the problem they caused with the previous numbering system, unchecking this option will cause the item to NOT work with the Design Tool.
