This is the red dragon tattoo I made with the tutorial from MisterS- it isn't exactly earth shattering but the tutorial was finally one even someone like me could understand. Very simple to follow for a change and looking forward to making more...

I think it would look more realistic if it wasn't completely opaque and without the white outline. Try using the dragon image as an alpha on a solid red colored image instead. Make sure your dragon is light grey, but not completely white - it will become a bit transparent, and the rest of the alpha channel is black.

Probably correct in all you said. It would definitely look better. Following the tutorial by MisterS I went in the image and tried to eliminate the white around the image as much as possible by using the pencil. Unfortunately not all of it was resolved. As for the other other suggestions- I would love to see what you suggested written out instruction wise if you have the time. I'm just learning about alpha masks and the like and would like to try what you suggested but do better with Step 1 and so on. Worked on this in Photoshop. Again- I appreciate your suggestions. It really could have been better but it was my first attempt (excuse excuse) and hope to do better next time.

Thanks!! All the help here on the forums really helped me understand Alpha Layers a bit more. I'm afraid there's no hope for me in the area of meshing, mapping or texturing though...

Try this:
1. Open your picture in Photoshop(I'm assuming that's what you use) and hit the letter D to reset the foreground and background colors to black and white. 2. Go to your Channels tab and select the alpha channel. If there is no alpha, create it by clicking the little icon at the bottom next to the trash can icon. Hit Alt+Backspace to fill alpha channel with black. 3. Select the RGB channel again and use the Wand tool to select your dragon shape. Or you can use any selection method you wish but this one is fast and easy. You might need to adjust the tolerance setting for the wand tool, depending on the shape in your image. 4. Select your alpha channel again and hit Ctrl+Backspace to fill it with white. If you want it to look more realistic though, you might want to pick a shade of grey. That way it won't look like the image was painted on the skin, but like an actual tattoo. 5. Select your RGB channel, press Shift+F5 to fill the entire image. Pick red color(or whichever you like) and press OK.
That should work fine for editing this kind of images. I don't make tattoos but if I ever wanted to make one, I would probably start with a vector image. Sketching a design on paper or in Photoshop is fine, but if you want really clean edges, you should render it in vector.
